Somewhere in future, humans have become completely dependent
on screens to live their lives and completely abandon books. Possession of
written materials is illegal and those who found guilty will be punished, their
books destroyed as well as their houses. Firemen, who, we believe supposed to put out fires; had a completely opposite
role – burn books.
At first, I found it hard to immerse myself with the story
because I could not think how humans can live without books and even hate them. But as the plot got thicken, I was more disturbed by the fact that humans banned
books because books made them unhappy? Books force people to think, thus
develop ideas and consequently contradict each other. Thought and disagreement make
people unhappy. This is the basis behind book burning activity. So what the government did? Burn books and
everyone will be happy.
How absurd is that? Book is what makes us happy while screen
is the one that drained happiness from us. Have you ever felt miserable after
watching the whole season of Korean drama in one night?I bet everyone felt
that. But have you felt the same when you finished a book in one night? No. You
feel happy. You brain is full of new information it releases happy hormones.
However, it is understandable why the writer wrote such kind of story. The novel was published around the year where television first introduced and immediately become worldwide sensation. Everyone sticked in front of a TV. Even today, we have become so absorbed with screens especially smartphones that REAL social interaction gradually declined. But people still reading. Demand for written materials is high.
